A drunk off-duty soldier threw condiments at customers and tried to headbutt a police officer in a McDonald’s restaurant.

Private Aaron Evans, 28, was arrested at the Whitehall branch of the fast food chain in Westminster, central London, on 31 January.

Evans, who is based at Camberley Barracks in Surrey, admitted that he “had too many beers” and pleaded guilty to drunk and disorderly behaviour at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

He had been out drinking with friends at The Clarence, a pub that sits directly opposite the Department for International Development.

Onlookers said Evans was swaying, shouting and slurring outside the pub, before ducking into the McDonald’s branch next door.

After entering, prosecutor Priya Varma said that Evans was “being a general nuisance”, and “throwing condiments at other customers inside”, before police were called to the scene.

Miss Varma added: “He was abusive to officers and refused to leave McDonald’s. He was making threats and at one point lashed out with his head and feet at officers.”

The soldier was given a fine after it emerged that he had been charged with the same offence by Cheshire Police just a week earlier.

The court heard that Evans has 20 previous convictions for 29 different offences _ including an arrest for drunk and disorderly behaviour just one week before the incident on Whitehall.

Asked to explain his actions by Magistrate Fenella Taylor, Evans said: “I had too many beers. It will never happen again.

“I’m now seeking help. My senior officers are not happy with me. They have put me through welfare to talk about my drinking and my anger issues.”

Issuing Evans with a fine, Miss Taylor said: “This sort of behaviour seems very unbecoming for a member of Her Majesty’s Forces.

“We are going to fine you. It is a Band C fine, aggravated by the fact that you have previous convictions for the same offence. It is going to be £320. That takes account of your guilty plea.”

Evans is also ordered pay £85 in court costs and a £32 victim’s surcharge fee.

Miss Taylor added: “As important as the payments is getting some help for your drinking, because it’s clearly problematic.”
