Two coffee shop patrons who fought with a drunk man were each fined $2,000 at the State Courts on Thursday (4 April).

On 29 May last year, the victim, Dhinesh S Ravindran, 22, went to the coffee shop at Block 175 Boon Lay Drive with a friend for breakfast at about 8am after a night of drinking.

Still tipsy, Dhinesh turned around to two men sitting at a nearby table and asked them, “Bro, you got order prata here or not? Why you never order?”

An argument broke out between the trio and one of the men, Ace Huang Jiaxing, 36, threw a packet of curry at the Dhinesh’s shirt.

Dhinesh then punched the other man Ng Teck Lee, 58, on the face.

Huang grabbed a nearby stool and hit Dhinesh repeatedly till it came apart. Both Ng and Huang then used the broken legs of the stool to hit Dhinesh and chase him out of the coffee shop.

Ng and Huang chased after Dhinesh, swinging the broken legs of the stool at him, until passers-by intervened. The trio dispersed before police arrived.

The maximum punishment for affray, which is disturbing the public peace by fighting in a public place, is up to one year in jail along with a fine of up to $5,000.
