MANILA, Philippines — Biased and not telling the whole truth. This was how President Rodrigo Duterte described some media agencies in the country as well as the Catholic church in a speech during the oath-taking ceremony of newly appointed government officials and recognition of Filipina entrepreneurs.
President Duterte called them oligarchs or businessmen with political influence in the country.
He also said this is the reason why problems in the country are not being resolved.
“That’s what ails the Philippine society. It’s the corrupt media, Prieto and Lopez, and the Catholic church. The oligarchs of this country. They had enjoyed only one percent since the time of Cory Aquino, until I stepped in,” said the President.
He also lambasted two media giants for reporting on his alleged P200 million bank account.
“During the elections, the Inquirer and ABS-CBN, they are after money. Why? You published 211 million which were all garbage.”
“You think you are more knowledgeable than the world. You are publishing garbage and everything,” he added.
The President recognizes that, “Journalism is always antagonistic; that’s their role,” however, he said, “do not overdo it.”
He also pointed out that media is making speculations about his health.
Duterte said he is not denying anything about his health conditions since he is already old.
“There is a member of the press that knows nothing but lies. Just like the picture during my birthday. There was a picture of my room with an oxygen converter. So what is my circulation? Not good. Lack of oxygenation. So until the time I sleep, I have it,” he clarified.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer refuted the President’s statement.
It emphasized its high standards in writing and maintains that it has always endeavored to get the government’s side on any issues.
Meanwhile, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines assured that that journalists will continue to keep the public aware of the events in the country, be it for or against the government. — Rosalie Coz | UNTV News and Rescue
