Dwight McNeil to receive England Under-21 call-up for games against Andorra and Turkey

Dwight McNeil is set to receive a recall to the England Under-21 squad after his omission during the last international break led to criticism from Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

Dyche had expected McNeil to be in contention for Gareth Southgate’s senior squad last month but the 20-year-old winger was on standby for Aidy Boothroyd’s Under-21s.

McNeil started every game in the Premier League last season and his performances have seen him monitored by bigger clubs, although he was overlooked for the Under-21 wins over Kosovo and Austria in September in favour of Reiss Nelson and Conor Gallagher.

Boothroyd is understood to have McNeil in his plans for next week’s European Championship qualifier in Andorra and the clash against Turkey at Molineux.

Dyche has insisted he would not stand in the way of McNeil when an offer comes for the youngster, who has now been a regular in the top flight for two seasons while others his age are looking for loans away from their clubs.

His club manager also felt he could have been a contender for the PFA Young Player of the Year, which was won by Trent Alexander-Arnold and saw Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Bukayo Saka nominated.

“He'd get more kudos if I was dipping him in and out of the team rather than playing every week,” said Dyche recently.

'It's impossible he wasn't considered a young player of the year when he's played every minute of every game. When Aidy Boothroyd rang up and said Dwight was on standby for the last international break, I honestly thought he meant for Gareth (Southgate) with the seniors.

“Aidy is a good friend of mine so don't give him too much heat, but factually speaking if you've played in every Premier League game for a season-and-a-half and made a difference to team that finished 10th, I am amazed you are not considered to be one of the top products in the country.”
