Earthquake hits southwest Indonesia

Jakarta (The Jakarta Post/ANN) - A 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook some areas of Bengkulu (southwest Indonesia) early Monday, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported.

"However, people reported that the quake's intensity was mild and it did not disrupt their activities," agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a text message sent to The Jakarta Post.

The quake, which began at 6.17a.m., did not cause any damage or injuries in the area.

Sutopo said that the quake was centered in the outer Eurasia shelf, 46 kilometers southeast of Seluma, Bengkulu, with depth of 15 kilometers below the sea's surface.

The tremor did not carry any tsunami threats.

"The Bengkulu chapter of the agency is still collecting detailed information about the quake on the ground," Sutopo said.
