East-West MRT line hit by 40-minute delay on Friday

A train fault on the East-West line caused a 30-minute service delay between Pasir Ris and Tanah Merah MRT stations on Friday evening, the latest in a series of recent SMRT breakdowns.

Some eastbound commuters travelling between City Hall and Pasir Ris stations were delayed by up to 40 minutes when a train stalled between Tampines and Simei stations at about 7:30 pm.

SMRT explained that the high train frequencies operating during the rush hour can lead to a congestion when there is a train fault.

Announcements were made at all affected stations and alerts were also posted through radio stations' Traffic Watch segments and SMRT's Twitter news feed, the public transport operator said.

Train service in both directions between Tanah Merah and Pasir Ris stations resumed at about 7.50pm.
