KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) has received official notice on the sudden vacancy of the Port Dickson parliamentary seat.
EC deputy chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood in a statement said the notice was received from Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusoff today.
Othman said the vacancy follows the resignation of Port Dickson MP Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah today.
"Therefore, the EC will convene a special meeting to discuss important dates in determining a by-election," he said.
He added that the dates include the election writ, nomination day, voting day as well as the electoral roll that will be used, and other preparations needed to hold the by-election.
"The date of the special meeting will be announced later," Othman added.
Earlier today, Danyal announced his resignation at a media conference held at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya.
His resignation is to pave way for a by-election to enable PKR incoming president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest in, in an effort for him to return to Parliament and subsequently take on the role of prime minister.
