EC: Report any misconduct committed during by-elections campaign period

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) today called on all to report any misconduct committed during the 21-day campaign period for the Balakong and Seri Setia by-elections to relevant authorities. EC member Datuk Md Yusop Mansor said all parties must comply to rules and ethics throughout the campaign period, which started from nomination day on Aug 18 until 11.59pm on Sept 7. “Those who are in the know of any misconduct should report it fast to the relevant authorities including the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) so that the next course of actions can be taken,” he said in a statement. He said all candidates and political parties contesting in the two by-elections should refrain from being involved in activities that violated the election rules such as giving gifts and using government assets to carry out their campaigns. Actions could be taken those involved as stipulated in the Election Offences Act 1954,Yusop warned. “In ensuring the election process is done in peace, harmony and orderly manner without confusing the voters in both constituencies, everyone including the party leaders, candidates and their supporters should follow the law and abide to instructions issued by the MACC, the police and other authorities,” he said. He also reminded those involved in the campaigning to stop all forms of campaigning or activities to garner votes on the polling day. “No one can solicit for votes including via the social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (on election day).”

The Balakong state seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Ng Tien Cheewho was killed in a road accident on July 20. A by-election for the Seri-Setia state seat was called after its incumbent Professor Dr Shaharuddin Baharuddin, who had been battling with colon and liver cancer for the past few years, died on Aug 2. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
