Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly is aiming for a comeback to remember in ONE Championship.
The veteran mixed martial artist will face debuting Egyptian Ahmed “The Prince” Faress at ONE: FULL BLAST, a previously recorded event that airs this Friday, 28 May, on meWATCH and the ONE Super App at 8:30 p.m. Singapore Standard Time (SGT).
“A win here would be huge for me. It would further add to my desire to return among the ranks of the best fighters in the featherweight division – and it starts with Ahmed,” Kelly said.
Kelly has been a staple of ONE since his promotional debut in 2013. During his eight-year tenure, he’s racked up some impressive wins and finishes. Those include a 21-second knockout of Meas Meul and a one-punch KO of Vincent Latoel.
However, the Filipino knows he needs this victory more than ever if he wants to crack the divisional rankings and challenge for the ONE Featherweight World Title.
“This is a very big match for me because I’m coming off a decision loss, a very close one. That’s why I regret that loss. I was that close to getting the win,” he said.
Bouncing back won’t be easy against Faress, who owns a 16-3 professional record and a 100 percent finishing rate, with 13 of those finishes coming by submission.
“I really worked double-time on my ground game. I know that’s where I’m lacking and that’s what I need to improve on,” Kelly said.
“It also just so happened that Ahmed is a very strong ground fighter, so it all fits.”
With all that said, don’t expect Kelly to roll over should the match hit the canvas. He’ll take the win any way he can get it, whether that’s with his punches and kicks or with his grappling.
“My main advantage has to be Team Lakay’s bread and butter in striking,” the veteran added.
“Though I don’t really care how I win, I just want to win, whether it be knockout, decision, or submission. I just want to win my match.”
