ILOILO CITY, Iloilo - The chief of the Iloilo Provincial Police Office (IPPO) has identified eight towns as election hotspots in the May 2013 polls.
At a command conference spearheaded by the Commission on Elections office in Region 6 (Comelec-6), S/Supt. Gil Lebin disclosed that the eight towns fit either of two categories set by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The first category identifies towns that are hotbeds of communist insurgency in the province. Calinog, Leon, Igbaras, Miag-ao, and Tubungan towns all fit such category.
The IPPO will closely coordinate with the Philippine Army's 301st Infantry Brigade (301 IB) based in Iloilo province to secure these areas from the New People's Army (NPA).
The IPPO chief said the other category fit localities with a high number of election-related violence in the past. Such category fit the towns of Estancia, San Enrique and San Dionisio.
Lebin said the IPPO is also closely monitoring suspected private armed groups in the province.
Earlier, Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO-6) tagged 315 barangays in Western Visayas as election hotspots.
Majority of these barangays are in Negros Occidental province even as the provinces of Capiz and Iloilo also have a high number of areas of concern.
