KOTA BARU: The Session’s Court here today sentenced a 69-year-old man to 5 years in jail after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting his 7-year-old disabled step-granddaughter last Saturday.

Judge Ahmad Bazli Bahruddin meted out the sentence after the rubber tapper pleaded guilty to the charge.

He was alleged to have sexually assaulted the girl at their home in Ketereh at 11.30am.

The accused was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of not more that 20 years and whipping.

The accused, who was unrepresented, requested for a lighter sentence, citing old age.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Norazlinawati Mohd Arshad however disagreed, saying that harsh punishment was needed as deterrent factor.

"The accused is a grandfather who should be taking care of his grandchildren, especially if the person is disabled." she said.

Ahmad Bazli then ordered the accused to serve 5 years in jail and the punishment to run from the day he was arrested.

According to the fact of the case, the victim's father, upon returning from a nearby clinic, went looking for the victim.

He later caught his stepfather and daughter on the bed.

When the elderly man failed to explain the situation, the victim's father lodged a police report at the Kok Lanas police station. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
