SINGAPORE — While strolling at a mall in Chinatown, a man elbowed a woman’s breast in full view of her husband.

When Poh Seng Khian was detained by the woman’s husband, he offered the couple $10 to be let off the hook.

The 84-year-old Singaporean was given 18 weeks’ jail on Tuesday (7 January) after he pleaded guilty to one count of molesting the 47-year-old woman along the second floor of People’s Park Centre. The wife and her husband cannot be named to protect her identity.

On 12 May last year, the woman and her 48-year-old husband were walking in the mall in the direction of the overhead link bridge that connects to Upper Cross Street. The man walked ahead of his wife and later turned around to wait for her to catch up.

Poh, who was in the same mall to have breakfast and do some shopping, approached the woman from the opposite direction. As he walked past the woman, he extended his right arm and bumped her breast with his elbow deliberately.

The area was not crowded at the time and Poh was able to pass the woman without making any contact, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Melina Chew. The woman was stunned and shocked by the act.

Her husband immediately stopped Poh and the police were alerted. While awaiting the arrival of the police, Poh apologised for the molesting the woman and offered $10 to put the matter to rest. The husband refused the money.

Poh was later arrested by the police.

For molest, Poh could have been jailed up to two years, and/or fined. He cannot be caned as he is above 50 years old.
