SARATOK: The police have detained a 67-year-old man for allegedly outraging the modesty of a nine-year-old girl. Saratok district police chief DSP Mordani Tanin in confirming the arrest, said the victim’s parents had lodged a police report on the incident. “Based on the police report, the incident took place at about 8pm on Tuesday when the victim was walking home from the mosque. “The man was allegedly grabbed her hand before carrying the victim to his house. “The suspect attempted to rape the girl, but the victim was able to escape through the back door,” he said. Acting on the report by the victim’s father, the police launched a man hunt to locate the man and arrested him at home.
“Investigation is being carried out under Section 14 (a) of Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ jail and whipping,” he said. He said the victim was sent to Sibu Hospital for medical check-up. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who works as a trader, admitted to molesting the victim,” he said. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
