Elderly woman dies in 'wok attack' by neighbour

KUALA TERENGGANU: An elderly woman died after she was bashed on the head with a wok during a robbery attempt by her own neighbour here, yesterday.

Rokiah A. Rahman, 84, died at the scene following the 2.30am incident. Her body was discovered by her daughter, Saripah Ibrahim, 52, when she returned home from work – with the wok lying next to her.

Saripah told police that upon reaching her home, she heard a loud noise coming from the living room. She rushed in to find her mother lying on the floor – and the suspect, who is her neighbour, as well as a work colleague – was seen hiding behind a cupboard with her face covered with a piece of cloth.

Kuala Terengganu District police chief ACP Idris Abd Rafar said the suspect, in her 30s, then sprang upon Saripah, and began to strangle her, as well as hitting her on the head and neck.

Luckily, villagers heard sounds of the scuffle, as well as Saripah’s screams for help, and quickly intervened.

The woman was apprehended by neighbours and later handed over to the police, added Idris. -- BERNAMA
