Election gun ban begins at midnight
Gun owners should refrain from bringing their firearms outside their homes starting midnight tonight.
This as the Commission on Election (Comelec) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) implements a 45-day nationwide gun ban in preparation for the Oct. 28 barangay elections.
The PNP will set up checkpoints in major thoroughfares to enforce the ban.
Political Science professor Dr. Noel Lansang said he expects barangay polls to be more violent than the May midterm elections.
"Mas magulo ito dapat mga three months man lamang ang gunban para mas mamonitor...Sa probinsya angkan-angkan diyan. Sa Metro Manila magulo ang mga loyalistang supporter," he said.
The gun ban for the barangay elections will end on November 12.
Based on data from PNP, as of September 2013, 47 barangay chairmen and 49 barangay councilors have been killed this year.
