Election hotspot

25 April 2013

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has placed the entire province of Misamis Oriental under area of immediate concern list following the attack on the wife of former Vice President Teofisto Guingona in Gingoog City last week that left two people dead.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said Misamis Oriental is one of the seven provinces which were recently included in the list of the so-called high risk provinces (hotspots) where election violence would likely occur for the midterm polls next month.

But unlike the 21 other provinces in the list, Brillantes said Misamis Oriental is the only area that was placed under the category of Area of Immediate Concern.

"Misamis Oriental was included because of the NPA (New People's Army) attack in Gingoog City," said Brillantes.

Earlier, Brillantes said any area where a rebel attack occurred should be immediately given special attention, noting that the NPA is a large armed group.

Saturday last week, the convoy of Gingoog City Mayor Ruth Guingona was ambushed by suspected communist rebels. She was wounded during the attack. (Aaron B. Recuenco)
