Erik ten Hag calls for patience on first day of Manchester United rebuild job

Erik ten Hag warned his Manchester United rebuilding job will require patience.

The Dutchman discovered the scale of the task facing him at United when he was at Selhurst Park to them United slump to a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on the final day of the season.

Ten Hag inherits a squad that has vastly underperformed this season and, speaking ahead of his unveiled at Old Trafford on Monday, said: “It’s a process, it will take time but I’m convinced we will come to that point where we get success.

“We have to work hard and it has to be based on the right philosophy and strategy.”

Ten Hag has confirmed United will start pre-season training ahead of the 2022-23 season on June 27.

After taking over at Old Trafford on a three-year contract, he is set to be backed with adequate funds to enhance the United squad this summer.

“In certain positions we want to renew the squad, but as I said, one year ago, this squad was second in the league, so there is potential and I’m really looking forward to co-operating with the squad,” he said.

Ten Hag has vowed to play attacking football to get United back to competing for major titles.

He said: “We don’t have to go over my football. It’s about the Man United football and about the Man United identity and philosophy.

“It has to be about attacking football. We have to bring structures in the way of playing, so we can play attacking football.”
