ESPN hires JJ Redick as NBA analyst

ESPN's ever-changing NBA broadcast team has a new face.

JJ Redick is joining the network as an analyst. The 15-year NBA veteran who announced his retirement last month will join the network's studio crew on Nov. 3 for the network's coverage of a game between the Atlanta Hawks and Brooklyn Nets.

ESPN announced the news on Wednesday alongside a statement from Redick that read:

“After 15 years in the NBA, I am excited to take what I have learned on the court and be able to provide my insight and strong opinions about the game I love."

What will Redick do at ESPN?

ESPN's studio coverage has a different look this season after the fallout from the Rachel Nichols controversy. Nichols is out, as is Maria Taylor, who left for NBC at the conclusion of last season's NBA Finals. Both of their exits arrived after The New York Times reported leaked audio of Nichols, who is white, suggesting that Taylor, who is Black, was awarded prime spots in the network's NBA coverage because of a diversity effort rather than her merits.

ESPN opened its coverage of the new NBA season last week with Mike Greenberg, Stephen A. Smith, Michael Wilbon and Jalen Rose on its pregame show "NBA Countdown." The network didn't specify what role Redick will play in his debut or if he would have a regular spot on "NBA Countdown."

It did note that Redick will also work as an in-game analyst for some games in addition to appearances on studio shows like "SportsCenter," "Get Up," "First Take," and "NBA Today," a weekday show that debuted this season replacing the canceled Nichols vehicle "The Jump."
