EU Commission Sends 'Letter of Formal Notice' to UK, Triggering Legal Action

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, confirmed on Thursday, October 1, that a “letter of formal notice” had been sent to the UK, triggering legal action against the UK for its draft bill on withdrawal from the EU.

Von der Leyen said the Commission had asked the UK to remove the “problematic parts” of its draft internal market bill by the end of September.

“This draft bill is by its very nature is a breach of the obligation of good faith laid down in the Withdrawal Agreement,” said Von der Leyen. “Moreover, if adopted as is, it will be in full contradiction to the protocol of Ireland-Northern Ireland.”

Von der Leyen said the letter of formal notice was the “first step in an infrigement procedure.”

“We stand by our commitments,” she said. Credit: European Commission via Storyful
