Europe's first over-water Ferris wheel opens in the Netherlands

A Ferris wheel built on a pier in The Hague stands more than 40 m tall

It's hardly the first Ferris wheel to open in Europe. But developers of the Skyview observation wheel in The Hague, Netherlands, are pitching it as the first in Europe to be built on a pier over water.

Standing more than 40 m high, the attraction features 36 air-conditioned gondolas, including a VIP gondola with a glass bottom.

Each carriage can fit up to six people and offers sweeping views of the sea, beach and skyline. Rides last about 20 minutes and tickets are €9.

Developers also plan to launch lunch, dinner and high tea options aboard the gondolas under the name "Dinner Wheel".

Skyview may have snagged bragging rights to building Europe's first Ferris wheel over water, but the Tianjin Eye in China is not only built above the Hai River, it also straddles a busy commuter bridge.
