Eva Mendes says she didn't want children before dating Ryan Gosling

From Harper's BAZAAR

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have remained fiercely private about their personal life since meeting on the set of the 2012 film The Place Beyond the Pines.

So, when either of the pair do decide to talk about the more intimate aspects of their lives, it tends to make headlines.

In a new interview with Nova 96.9's Fitzy & Wippa radio show, Mendes discussed why she wasn't keen on having children before meeting her husband.

When the interviewer asked if she was ready to start acting following a six-year break, she replied: "I am now that [my kids are] getting a bit older, but I really feel like I never want to send the wrong message to young women out there. It's not an either/or situation."

The 46-year-old gave birth to their first daughter, Esmeralda Amada, in 2014, and their second, Amada Lee, in April 2016, and went on to reveal why she didn't have children in her early career.

"I was lucky enough to work my bum off for 20 years," she explained. "I never wanted babies before until I fell in love with Ryan, and it kind of worked out to where I was 40 and having my first baby. I think I was 42 for the second one, so it worked out in that way that I had a career and then I changed my focus to my family."

Back in April, Mendes touched on why she doesn't post about her immediate family online.

"I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids. I’ll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life. And since my children are still so little and don’t understand what posting their image really means, I don’t have their consent," she wrote to a fan on Instagram.

"And I won’t post their image until they’re old enough to give me consent. As far as Ryan and I, it just works for us this way, To stay private. Sending loads of love to you at this time."

During Gosling's Golden Globes Best Actor acceptance speech for La La Land in January 2017, the actor touched upon the constant support he receives from the mother of his children.

"I would like to try and thank one person properly and say that while I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I've ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer," he said.

"If she hadn't taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So, sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, I love you."
