Every Piece of Floyd Furniture Is an Absolute Cinch to Put Together
I’m probably in the minority when I admit that putting together IKEA furniture is a hobby of mine. Sure, the process is frustrating, the instructions are (almost) comically unhelpful and more often than not a whole part is missing. But there’s no feeling more satisfying than admiring your handiwork in a new piece of furniture. However, I recently abandoned IKEA for Floyd and I may never look back.
Founded in 2014, Floyd has come a long way since its earliest days, when it offered only a simple, low Platform Bed ($995). From the start, the company has been dedicated to producing high-quality, long-lasting American furniture—think clean lines, blonde wood and white metal details.
I became acquainted with Floyd when I started graduate school, recognizing that I would be A) short on time (and energy) to wrestle with the usual furniture in a box and B) in my late 20s by the time I graduated. I decided I should probably start investing in pieces to keep for the long haul, so I checked out the brand’s Round Table ($755).
Here’s the thing: Floyd’s designs don’t come with a million bits and pieces—or the need for drills, hammers and five different types of screwdriver heads. Instead, all I received was the sizable 46-inch round tabletop (I chose the blush color), four steel legs and 12 fasteners. The table itself is heavy, which is unsurprising, given the quality of the handmade pieces. But all I had to do was place the legs into their slots and screw in the fasteners by hand. From start to finish, it took approximately three minutes to put together, and it hasn’t wobbled once since then.
“We launched our business with the idea of creating products that could move and grow with you—so optimizing assembly and disassembly has been an extremely important part of our process from the very beginning,” Floyd cofounder Kyle Hoff told me. In the past six years, Floyd has expanded its collection significantly; whereas there were just two tables for me to choose from when I was shopping at Floyd a few years ago, there are now four options—The Table/Desk ($675), The Round Table ($755), The Coffee Table ($445) and The Side Table ($205). All of them feature the same birchwood surface and metal legs, a combo that is easy to assemble and disassemble. “We like think that the tables can look good in any space, whether you live in a studio in NYC or a Schindler House in L.A., or at any stage of your life,” Hoff added. “It’s meant to be kept.”
While Floyd isn’t looking to put the IKEAs of the world out of business, the brand does call itself “anti-disposable furniture.” Hoff pointed out that “9.8 million tons of furniture waste is thrown into landfills in the U.S. every year.” Floyd’s pieces, however, are made for the long haul. From the utility-forward bed frame (which now comes with the option for under-bed storage) to the cleverly customizable shelving units and even its super comfy sofa collection, all pieces are elegant and simple, both in aesthetic and in assembly.
And I, for one, will be keeping my Floyd table for years to come.
