Ex-cop charged with causing death of two-year-old stepdaughter


KUALA LUMPUR: A former police corporal was charged at the Sessions Court today with causing the death of his two-year-old stepdaughter two years ago.

Muhammad Khairuanuar Baharuddin, 36, who was the child’s mother’s husband from a second marriage, pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Hanis Amanda Mohd Zafil.

The offence was allegedly committed at F-03, Loging Height 1, Jalan 1/27C, Seksyen 5, Wangsa Maju here between 3pm and 10.13pm on Nov 6, 2015.

Khairuanuar also claimed trial to an alternative charge of abusing the child or exposing in a manner likely to cause her physical injury at the same place and time.

The first offence under Section 304 of the Penal Code carries a maximum 30 years’ jail and a fine, upon conviction.

The second offence under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 31(2)(a) of the same Act, carries a maximum 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

Clad in a grey sweater and black ‘kopiah’, Khairuanuar nodded in understanding when the charges were read before Judge Azian Othaman.

Deputy Public Prosecutor K. Vasugi prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.

Azian did not offer bail to Khairuanuar and fixed March 31 for mention.
