A former Head of Department (HOD) for English at Woodgrove Secondary School in Woodlands on Wednesday (28 November) claimed trial to two charges of criminal breach of trust as a servant involving more than $40,000.

Maslinda Zainal, 44, is accused of misappropriating a total of $21,627.40 between 1 January and 31 December 2016. She purportedly also pocketed $19,009.30 between 1 January and 7 April last year.

The monies were collected from students for learning materials known as Excel packages. Maslinda, who earned a gross monthly salary of $8,800, allegedly collected the $40,636.70 in excess of what students were required to pay.

The teacher was first brought to court to face her two charges late last year. She is currently suspended from her duties.

If found guilty of criminal breach of trust as a servant, Maslinda faces life imprisonment, or up to 10 years’ jail along with a fine, per charge.
