Former national para-athlete Adam Kamis was jailed for 38 months on Monday (27 June) for recruiting a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation and other vice-related offences involving 15 women.

Wearing a polo top and pants, Adam was expressionless as he stood in the dock to receive his punishment for the 12 charges that he was facing. The 37-year-old, who is married, lost his right arm and had his left arm paralysed in a motorcycle accident in 2003.

Better known as the one-armed runner, Adam was convicted on two counts of procuring a woman for prostitution, nine of trying to procure a woman for prostitution, and one of recruiting a girl for sexual exploitation.

According to court papers, Adam used Facebook to recruit the women between 2013 and 2015. He promised them up to $1,000 per assignment to work as social escorts at the agency that he set up in 2013. To gain the trust of the women, Adam pretended to be a woman and was using the nickname “Angel Tan”.

Adam asked the women to fill in an online questionnaire before meeting them in his flat in Yishun when his wife was not at home. According to court papers, Adam assessed the women by having sex with them.

On 21 April 2015, Adam sexually exploited the 16-year-old girl. She had met him at his flat where he introduced himself as “Bob”. He inspected her body before telling her that he needed to test her sexual skills.

Despite her protest, Adam had unprotected sex with her. Adam also asked her to send him pictures of her but the victim refused.

A gold medalist at the 2009 Asean Para Games, Adam also took part in the Commonwealth Games.

Family spoke about Adam’s difficulties

Adam’s wife and an aunt of his were in court on Monday. When approached by the media, his wife refused to comment.

His aunt Asmah Jumaat, who spoke to Yahoo Singapore after the sentencing, said that it will be tough for Adam to look after himself in prison.

“When he was remanded, they (the police) actually called his wife to attend to him in the lock-up,” said the 66-year-old housewife.

Asmah said that Adam was greatly affected by the arrest and had kept to himself while he was out on bail. She added she was sad that her nephew will be in jail just days before Hari Raya Eid Fitr.

“I cannot believe that he did it (the sexual offences). I mean look at him, he cannot even look after himself, how can he do it?” said Asmah.
