Hollyoaks star Owen Warner has spoken for the first time about the show's mysterious flashforward scenes.

Late last year, the Channel 4 soap's special New Year episode offered fans an early glimpse of December 31, 2020 – posing more questions than answers.

One scene saw Owen's character Romeo Quinn suited and booted for a wedding, but he was clearly in an agitated state. When his friend Tom Cunningham (Ellis Hollins) warned that his behaviour was going to ruin the happy event, Romeo replied: "I still love her – what am I supposed to do?"

Another scene showed a body bag and crime scene outside The Hutch, with John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) and Darren Osborne (Ashley Taylor Dawson) both devastated after a shock death.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about fan reaction to the flashforward, Owen revealed: "I've seen theories that me and Tom are getting married, I've seen theories that I'm marrying Peri, and I've seen theories that Tom is marrying Peri!

"There have been all sorts of theories. It's nice, because it's so open-ended. The fact that there are so many theories shows that nobody has got a clue, which is nice.

"The writers have given us some hints but they're being quite tight-lipped about it."

On the body bag, Owen joked: "The cast are very nervous! Everyone is treading very carefully!"

The unique flashforward concept has also created continuity issues for the cast involved, who can't change their appearance over the next year.

Owen laughed: "I've been told that I'll have to fit in that same suit, so I have to watch my weight and have the same hairstyle.

"But it's usually like that anyway and you can't change your appearance. I see my mates from back home and they've completely changed whereas I look exactly the same!"

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
