The Power star Toni Collette has responded to that demeaning 'panties in a bunch' scene. Currently appearing in the new sci-fi series The Power from Prime Video, Collette plays Seattle Mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez.

Based on Naomi Alderton's 2016 novel of the same name, The Power is set during a time when all of the teenage girls in the world suddenly develop the power to produce electricity and subsequently electrocute people at will.

Following the revelation, a seismic shift in the global power balance takes place, forever changing the world as they know it.

Collette's mayor Cleary-Lopez plays a pivotal role in the series as the first government official who is willing to stand up and tell the public the truth about what is happening with the teenage girls.

While Collette may play one of the most powerful women in the show, her character is not exempt from workplace sexism and misogyny.

In one scene in particular, Daniel Dandon, the governor of Washington, played by Josh Charles, tells Cleary-Lopez not to "get your panties in a bunch".

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Collette said that this sort of situation is unfortunately commonplace for many women: "We've all been in a situation like that, haven't we?

"It's really interesting that a woman, who compared to some of the other characters in the show is very much in her power and able to implement some kind of change and represents people with good intentions – and she still has to face that kind of crap."

Recently, Colette opened up about the nerves she felt when filming the scene in which her character delivers a powerful speech to the public: "I was actually a little bit nervous about that [scene], because it is an absolute pivot for the character and for the story."

The Power is streaming now on Prime Video with new episodes releasing weekly on Fridays.
