SINGAPORE — A 33-year-old former teacher who sexually abused his 14-year-old student was on Thursday (19 March) jailed for three years and seven months.

The Singaporean perpetrator, who taught at a secondary school, had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual penetration of a minor and one count of committing an indecent act with a young person.

Four other similar charges were considered in sentencing.

The culprit cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity.

Perpetrator gave victim gifts

The culprit had been teaching the victim since the latter was in Secondary 1 in 2017. In January the next year, they started exchanging text messages and got closer.

When the victim’s father confiscated her handphone in March 2018, the perpetrator left her a handphone in his pigeon hole. He also gave her a wrist watch as a birthday gift.

In September 2018, the culprit stopped texting the victim as he felt guilty towards his pregnant wife.

But between January and March last year, the perpetrator and the victim messaged each other every day. Some of the messages were sexual in nature and contained obscene photos.

On two occasions early last year, the culprit brought the victim to his home and engaged in sexual acts with her, even though she was 14.

Brought victim back to his home

On 15 February, the perpetrator picked the victim up and drove her to school. Later that afternoon, he drove her to his flat, where he kissed her on the lips on the sofa. He then led her to his bedroom where he undressed himself and took off her clothes.

The culprit and the victim then lay on the bed, where they kissed and caressed each other. He also asked her to perform oral sex on him. Later, he drove her back to school, where her mother picked her up.

The next month, during the March school holidays, the culprit also conspired with the victim to lie to her mother about a purported remedial class on 18 March. The perpetrator offered to pick the victim up from her mother’s workplace and drove her to his flat, where they kissed and made out on the sofa.

The culprit once more led the victim to his bedroom, where he took off all of his clothes and the victim’s clothes before he sexually abused her.

On 4 April, the victim’s father found out that she was using her teacher’s handphone, and that the culprit had picked her up to and from school on two occasions.

The victim’s father also found messages that suggested a romantic relationship between the duo and reported the matter to the school principal, who then made a police report.

The maximum punishment for sexual penetration of a minor under 16 is up to 10 years’ jail and a fine.

The maximum penalty for committing an indecent act with a young person is a fine of up to $10,000 and up to five years’ jail.
