KUALA LUMPUR: Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang is expected to table his Private Member's Bill to empower the shariah courts later today.

The bill, which seeks to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, is listed at number 1 in the Parliamentary order paper.

The proposed amendment to Section 2 of the Act is to increase the current "imprisonment of more than three years, or fine of more than RM5,000, or more than six lashes" to "jail term of more than 30 years, or fine of more than RM100,000, or 100 lashes, as administered in line with shariah crime(s)".

Hadi will be moving the bill for the third time in the Dewan Rakyat. It was first moved on May 26, last year.

In Nov last year, he again tabled a motion for its first reading.
