Facebook considering building first Asia data centre in Taiwan
The social media giant could soon be neighbours with Google, which recently funded a US$64M improvement to its facility in Changhua County
Facebook is gauging the feasibility of opening a NT$10 billion (US$306 million) data centre in Changhua County in Taiwan, as first reported by Reuters.
Citing a statement by Changhua County Magistrate Wei Ming-ku on Wednesday, the report said the data centre would be the first for Facebook in the Asia-Pacific region.
“We’ve made all-out efforts to ensure sufficient supply of water and electricity … We hope they will come,” said Wei in the Reuters report.
“As a global company working to connect billions of people around the world, we are always evaluating potential sites for new data centres, but we don’t have anything to announce at this time,” a Facebook spokesperson said in the report.

If Facebook goes through with the centre, it would be joining Google as a major tech company with a data centre in the county. Earlier this year, Google invested an additional NT$2.1 billion (US$64.2 million) to expand and improve the facility. The other Google data centre in Asia is in Singapore.
In the US, Facebook has data centres in Oregon and North Carolina while also currently being courted in Montana. The other data centre is in Luleå, Sweden.
