Facebook launches App Center for social apps on iOS, Android, web

Social network Facebook has introduced its own App Center, a place for mobile users to discover and download social apps for iOS, Android and the web.

Facebook first revealed its plans to launch the App Center in May and now the multi-platform app recommendation service is finally rolling out to Facebook’s 900 million users.

“The App Center gives you personalized recommendations, and lets you browse the apps your friends use,” said Facebook’s Matt Wyndowe. “It only lists high-quality apps, based on feedback from people who use the app.”

While Facebook will be selling some apps directly through the App Center, the platform will also host links to apps found in Apple’s iOS App store, the Google Play store for Android devices and web-based apps that use Facebook’s Connect login platform.

“Every app in the App Center has screenshots and a detailed description, so you can learn more about it before installing it,” said Wyndowe. “It helps you control your privacy by showing the information an app needs and letting you choose who can see your activity on Facebook.”

Facebook users can browse through apps on the web-based version of the App Center or use the Facebook iOS and Android apps to discover some of the more than 600 apps already available through the store.

“You can send apps you find on your computer to your mobile device using the new “Send to Mobile” feature. If a mobile app requires a download, you’ll be sent to install it from the Apple App Store or Google Play,” said Facebook.

Facebook users in the US will be the first to try out the Facebook App Center, with the feature becoming available from Friday. A wider rollout for people living in additional countries will take place over the coming weeks.
