GE2015: FULL COVERAGE

Facebook won't end on March 15

Good news for users of Facebook: the social networking site juggernaut is not ending on March 15, as claimed by a new hoax.

Computer security firm Sophos said the hoax involves a photo of a supposed news report that Facebook may shut down March 15 as Mark Zuckerberg is too stressed.

"The link being shared points to the website of the Weekly World News. Facebook users in America may be all too aware that stories published in the Weekly World News (WWN) often only have the very loosest relationship with the truth," Sophos said in a blog post.

Weekly World News is a site known for its offbeat "news" articles.

Yet, Sophos said some worried Facebook users have been sharing a photograph of a news report about the claimed closure of Facebook.

It noted Weekly World News' other popular stories include "MEGAN FOX IS A MAN!", "ALIEN SPACESHIPS TO ATTACK EARTH IN NOVEMBER 2012", and "CONFIRMED: WORLD WILL END OCTOBER 21, 2011."

"In fact, the Weekly World News's bogus claim about the end of Facebook, seems to be its most popular story by far with over 22,000 comments from concerned users," Sophos said.

"Hoaxes like this waste time, use up bandwidth, and simply underline that many people don't check their facts before sharing links and spreading news," it added. — TJD, GMA News
