Fake Facebook pages of PAP MPs taken down: Alex Yam

A number of fake Facebook pages masquerading as those of People’s Action Party (PAP) MPs have been found. According to PAP executive director Alex Yam, who highlighted the issue in a Facebook post on Friday (17 March), 11 such “spoof” accounts had been taken down.

According to Yam, the fake accounts had been appearing over the past few days. The accounts, bearing the images and names of the affected MPs, would add people as friends then attempt to phish for information by sending spam messages to people via Facebook Messenger.

While Yam did not name the affected MPs in his Facebook post, local media reports stated that fake accounts in the names of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing, and MPs Ang Hin Kee, Ang Wei Neng, Cheryl Chan, Chee Hong Tat, Chia Shi-Lu, Darryl David, Desmond Choo, Heng Chee How, Lily Neo, and Tin Pei Ling were reported and taken down.

On Facebook, the accounts of most public figures, including MPs, are accompanied by a blue tick (for verified accounts) or a grey tick (for authentic accounts).
