Faker leads T1 past JDG to first Worlds finals since 2017
Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok has finally made it back to the Worlds grand finals after five years.
The League of Legends (LoL) G.O.A.T. led T1 to the grand finals of the League of Legends World Championship 2022 after beating JD Gaming 3-1 in the semifinals on Sunday (30 October).
JDG came into the competition as the LoL Pro League (LPL) first seed and Summer Champions.
JDG progressed to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 record and the top seed from Group B, losing just one group stage game against DWG KIA. In the end, they got their revenge and won the tiebreaker game to take the top spot in their group.
T1, on the other hand, won their group by a comfortable margin (5-1), therefore they didn't have to participate in a tiebreaker game and went straight into the playoffs. They only lost once in Week 1 of groups, against Fnatic.
Each squad was phenomenal in the semi-finals. Rogue, the West's last best chance, was swept by JDG, 3-0. Meanwhile, T1 exacted retribution against international rivals and 2022 Mid-Season Invitational Champions Royal Never Give Up (RNG), who had trounced them at the MSI grand finals in front of their home crowd.
This semifinal win allows T1 to be part of the grand finals of Worlds 2022 for the first time in five years. Keria was notably named Player of the Game, with some clutch Nami plays and timely Renata ultimates that setup Gumayusi and the rest of the team.
Meanwhile, JDG bow out of the competition in 3th-4th place, taking home US$178,000 in consolation.
T1 will be facing the winner of the semifinals match between Gen.G and DRX at the Grand Finals which will be held in San Francisco, California on Sunday morning (6 November) at 8:00 A.M. Singapore time.
