Famed Kedah philanthropist strikes again with rice giveaway

SUNGAI PETANI: Renowned local philanthropist Abdul Ghani Haron today gave away 2,300 bags of 5kg rice worth RM25,700 at three separate locations here.

Some 1,500 bags of the rice were snapped up in just 30 minutes, mostly by members of low-income families who queued at his home in Kampung Masjid, Tikam Batu here, as early as 6.30am.

"We also distributed 500 bags of rice at Masjid Kampung Tengah and another 300 bags at Masjid Kampung Setol this morning.

"Besides that, we are also distributing 700 bags of rice, worth RM7,840, to needy recipients at Masjid Alor Mengkudu, Tanjung Bendahara, in Alor Setar next week," he said.

Ghani, 60, thanked his Facebook followers for chipping in for the free rice giveaway, and said he hopes that the initiative could help ease the recipients’ financial burden.

The big-hearted man is a retired Kuala Muda District Education Office staff member and is known for his extraordinary charity works.

In the past, he has given away free cooking oil, chicken, diapers and baby milk formula, as well as petrol.

Ghani’s giveaways have become a tradition of sorts here, as this is the sixth time he has conducted a mass distribution of essential items.

Ghani welcomes anyone who wishes to contribute to his unique giveaway programme, saying that they can send donations to his Maybank account: 5574 1051 5106.
