FarmVille is shutting down by the end of the year, marking the end of an era

Pack it up, y’all. FarmVille is on its way out.

Zynga announced that FarmVille will be shut down after 11 years of service. The news came via a post listed on FarmVille’s FAQ site.

“We’re aware that many of you have been with us since the very beginning,” Zynga wrote in the post, “Helping to build an incredible global community of players over the years who’ve enjoyed this game just as much as we have. For that we say thank you.”

The company explained that the game will be discontinued because of the inevitable march of technological progress. In 2017, Adobe announced that it would kill Flash by the end of 2020, and it is holding true to that promise. As a Flash game, FarmVille’s destiny was tied with Flash in their shared obsolescence.

Zynga told customers that in-app purchases are still available up to Nov. 17. It’s also planning some in-game activities for players until FarmVille closes its doors for good on Dec. 31.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that this marks the end of an era. Millennials will remember FarmVille as the game they sunk hundreds of hours into from their local library computers and university terminals. It was part of the Flash game craze in the early 2000s and the game that propelled Zynga into the massive developer it is today. At its peak, FarmVille was being played by 30 million active users a day.

Fortunately for fans, FarmVille is also a franchise. Zynga encouraged players to migrate over to the original game’s sequels FarmVille 2 and FarmVille 3.

For more details on FarmVille’s status and upcoming demise, Zynga made a follow-up post addressing specific questions.
