Feng Xiaogang makes fun of Chen Kaige vs. Taoism

21 Jul – Chinese comedy auteur Feng Xiaogang recently started a wave of mock apologies over the internet after making fun of a Taoist Association's dissatisfaction for Chen Kaige's "Monk Comes Down the Mountain".

Previously, an official of China's Taoist Association demanded that Chen apologise for the false representation of a Tao priest in his new movie.

"The Taoist priest in the movie broke the commandments as he robbed, killed, got intoxicated and had sex with a woman," according to a statement released by the association.

Following the news, fellow director Feng Xiaogang turned to Weibo, and joked, "The association of monsters deserves an apology from director of Monster Hunt."

"Monster Hunt" is a fantasy-comedy film created by "Shrek" director, Raman Hui.

Feng's post had since started trending, with many others joining in with their own joke.

One Netizen wrote, "Monkeys deserve an apology from Monkey King", while another posted, "Somalian pirates deserve an apology from Pirates of the Caribbean".

"Dinosaurs deserve an apology from Jurassic World," said another.

But one thing is clear. Almost all Netizens believed that Chen should not apologise for his movie, and that people should not take it seriously.
