The broadband outage that affected Singtel, M1, StarHub users in Pasir Ris, Tampines, Changi and Loyang on 14 November, 2018, was due to severed fibre cable, said fibre broadband network builder NetLink Trust.

Fibre broadband network builder NetLink Trust said on Friday morning (16 November) that it has fully resolved the cut fibre cable issue that affected about 10,000 users in eastern Singapore on Wednesday afternoon.

The disruption, which lasted more than 30 hours, was caused by the severing of some fibre cables in the network. NetLink Trust said that the interruption was resolved on Thursday night at around 10.03pm.

Broadband service was disrupted for about 10,000 users in Pasir Ris, Tampines, Changi and Loyang on Wednesday, from around 2.50pm. The outage affected subscribers of StarHub, Singtel, M1 and MyRepublic.

Rebates and waivers from telcos

As a “gesture of goodwill and appreciation”, StarHub said that all its affected customers will be offered a S$10 rebate on their December bill. Both M1 and Singtel also said that affected customers will have their local mobile data charges waived during the service interruption.

The disruption was caused by a contractor who severed a number of fibre cables while performing construction works along Tampines Avenue 9. The contractor was not engaged by NetLink Trust nor its vendors.

“NetLink Trust takes a serious view of such disruption in services caused by errant contractors. NetLink Trust is investigating this matter and will take all necessary actions against the errant party,” it said.

Affected customers can monitor NetLink Trust’s website for updates.
