Devotees wearing face masks walked barefoot for hours while hitting their backs with bamboo whips, believing the act could save them from their sins, cure illnesses, and grant wishes.

The Catholic Church has expressed disapproval of these self-punishments as misinterpretations of faith, saying prayers and sincere repentance are enough to commemorate the observance of Lent.

The Philippine government has reimposed strict quarantine restrictions in the capital and surrounding provinces until Monday (April 4) as the country battles to contain a surge in COVID-19 cases.
