A Filipino who allegedly made anti-Singaporean comments on Facebook has been charged with sedition and giving false information during police investigations.

Ed Mundsel Bello Ello faces two charges under the Sedition Act and three charges of providing false information to a public servant.

Under the Sedition Act, the comments posted by the 28-year-old had the "tendency to promote feelings of ill-will and hostility” between Singaporeans and Filipinos.

On 4 January, Ello allegedly lied to the police, saying he did not post the comments on Facebook, and that his account had been compromised.

In January, Ello was also sacked by Tan Tock Seng Hospital where he was employed as a nurse.

If convicted, Ello faces a fine of up to $5,000 and/or a jail term of up to three years on each sedition charge.

For providing false information to the police, he could face a jail term of up to one year and/or a fine of up to $5,000 on each charge.
