Finland pledges over $30 million ammo purchase for Ukraine

Finnish government decided to allocate EUR 30 million ($32 million) for the Czech initiative to purchase ammunition for Ukraine, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said on X on March 19.

Häkkänen discussed with the Commander of the Czech Armed Forces the improvement of European defense support and aid for Ukraine, including the Czech ammunition initiative.

Portugal also approved the allocation of EUR 100 million ($109 million) to support the Czech initiative on March 14.

Czech initiative on procurement of ammunition for Ukraine

Czech President Petr Pavel first announced the possibility of purchasing 800,000 shells for Ukraine on Feb. 17.

He said that Czechia had secured commitments for 500,000 155mm shells and 300,000 122mm shells, though he did not disclose the source countries. Several other European nations have also joined this initiative to supply ammunition to Ukraine.

The plan is believed to involve spending about $2 billion to purchase shells from South Africa and South Korea, a Ukrainian military representative told NV. Allies have already acquired the necessary funding to purchase the shells, announced on March 7.

Czechia had purchased 800,000 artillery shells from South Korea, South Africa, and Turkey, and could deliver them to Ukraine within a few weeks, Germany’s Bild reported on March 11.

Ukraine may receive ammunition from Czechia in June, Czech national security advisor, Tomáš Poyar reported.

About 800,000 artillery shells purchased under the Czech initiative will arrive on the front lines soon, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on March 13.
