A fire at Ngee Ann City on Wednesday evening (26 September) that saw the evacuation of shoppers and workers from one of its towers was later discovered to be “a pile of smoldering trash”, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

Responding to a fire alarm call at Tower B of Ngee Ann City at about 5.08pm, the SCDF located the source of smoke from a pile of trash accumulated at the bottom of a ventilation shaft within a stairwell and extinguished it with a hosereel.

“Tower B was evacuated as a precautionary measure prior to SCDF’s arrival. There were no reported injuries,” it added.

Facebook user Nicole Lim wrote that she had to walk down from her office on the 18th floor of the building. Photos taken by Lim also showed crowds gathering just outside the shopping centre.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
