ROMPIN: A 12-year-old student's bid to commit suicide by jumping off from the second floor of a school here was thwarted when firemen saved him at 9am this morning.
Kuala Rompin Fire and Rescue commander of operations Zahari Razali said the Primary Six student was rescued after a six-man fire department team spent 20 minutes coaxing the boy to abandon his attempt.
"We also gave him water (to drink) and calmed him down, which made him change his mind (about taking his own life).
"At the same time, we were also prepared to conduct a rescue operation if our attempt to persuade the pupil failed," said Zahari when contacted today.
It is understood that the student's suicide bid was driven by problems he faced at school.
