SINGAPORE —A surgical mask maker was charged with producing at least 431,480 pieces of three-ply surgical masks without a manufacturer's license.

First N-Lab was handed one charge under the Health Products Act on Thursday (20 January) for manufacturing the masks, labelled ‘N-LAb’, without a license between October 2020 and April 2021 at its 31 Woodlands Close premises at Woodlands Horizon.

The masks are considered a Class A medical device under the Health Products Act and hence require a manufacturer's license.

A check of the firm's website yielded no results as the user was redirected to another site. The latest post on its Facebook page on 29 May last year stated that the surgical masks were temporarily out of stock due to "raw material disruption".

The firm is expected to plead guilty on 28 February.

If convicted, a person may be jailed up to two years, and/or fined up to $50,000.

Where an entity is convicted of an offence under the Health Products Act, the court may impose a penalty a fine of up to twice the maximum amount.
