First Dibs: Puzzle Coffee — Popular Melbourne coffee house brings edible coffee cups to ION Orchard

Melbourne’s coffee culture is incredibly strong with its many coffee houses. Even though we’re only a few hours away by flight, Puzzle Coffee has brought a part of Melbourne’s coffee identity to Singapore with their recent extension into ION Orchard. It has opened its doors to its 5th outlet; the one and only outlet on international grounds.

Sustainable management is something that Australians take very seriously, hence Puzzles Coffee practices its social responsibility by keeping eco-friendly. The bean-to-cup coffee house provides environmentally-friendly ways for their customers to save the earth by sharing the vision of sustainability while enjoying coffee. As such, they only use compostable and biodegradable coffee cups and straws that are 100% plastic-free.

This promise of utilising environmentally-friendly material stretches out to the whole setup of their physical outpost which is fully made out of recyclable materials— that itself amazed me as I looked in awe at their whole new space.

Their space pans out into a minimalistic wooden aesthetic with rows of wooden stools and display areas at the back of the store. Located right beside the new TEL line, it is very easy to spot Puzzle Coffee.

Their dedication to being responsible for the environment spreads out to their food and beverages as well! If you’ve heard of Puzzle Coffee, you would’ve probably have heard of the ever-famous edible cup. Customers can choose to enjoy any drink of their choice in the Edible Oats and Grain Cup for an additional S$3. Yes, you heard me right! This cup is made out of oats and grains that sustains coffee for up to 8 hours, and you can eat it too! Of course, the cup will soften within an hour with liquid inside, so do take note.

Flavour wise, the edible cup gives an added texture as compared to normal cookies because of the grainy layer that they have. Loaded with fibre, the oat-grain cup pairs well with the bitter yet milky roast of the beans.

Over here, you can expect some interesting inclusions to their lineup. They have Black Sesame Latte (S$6), Biscoff Latte (S$6.50) and Hojicha Latte (S$6.50), bringing in a delightful range of trendy flavours and traditional favourites.

One new addition on the menu that you should definitely try is the Purple Sweet Potato Latte (S$6.50). Made predominantly by dehydrated sweet potatoes, the sweetness is derived from that single ingredient with no added sugar.

Fun fact— this is a Singapore-exclusive drink! If I had to choose, this would probably my personal favourite, just because of how refreshing the natural sweetness was!

Expect quality bakes with fresh flavours like the Pear Crumble Danish (S$5) and an infusion of local elements with the Kaya Croissant (S$5). Pair your coffees with a crumbly, flakey pastry for the full Melbourne coffee experience!
