Friends star Lisa Kudrow is joining The Office's Steve Carell for one of the most highly-anticipated Netflix comedy series in recent memory.

The two will be starring in the streaming service's science fiction sitcom Space Force, from The Office showrunner and Parks and Recreation co-creator Greg Daniels.

Carell plays four-star general Mark R Naird, whose dreams of running the Air Force are dashed when the president taps him to run the hastily-created Space Force division.

Naird is forced to rush the creation of a brand new division of the US military tasked with complete domination of all of space.

Kudrow will place Naird's wife Maggie, a Washington mainstay whose own ambition is taking her on a separate path from her husband.

Netflix has described Space Force as "a new kind of workplace comedy", where the stakes are quite literally "sky high and the ambitions even higher".

The cast of Space Force also includes two-time Academy Award nominee John Malkovich, Sonic the Hedgehog star Ben Schwartz and The Walking Dead's Noah Emmerich.

Kudrow has worked frequently with Netflix in recent years, playing Sheree in Grace and Frankie and voicing the owl Wanda in animated comedy BoJack Horseman.

Carell has also ventured into the world of streaming TV playing a disgraced US TV anchor in the uber-expensive AppleTV+ series The Morning Show, which will be returning for a second season with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.

No release date for The Morning Show season two has been set since production was stopped during the worldwide shutdown.

Space Force will be launching on Netflix worldwide on May 29, 2020.
