Five Jurong West residents given SCDF award for saving man who had cardiac arrest

Five residents in Jurong West including a kindergarten girl have been recognised by The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for saving the life of a man who had collapsed from a cardiac arrest.

The SCDF gave the Community Life Savers Award to the residents at a ceremony held at the SCDF 4th Div HQ at Bukit Batok on Wednesday (14 March).

The award recipients were Renisse Lim, 6; her mother Selina Hui, 38, logistic manager; Cheong Sun Tze, 46, taxi driver; Ng Kim Fo, 40, service ambassador; and Goh Keh Wee Kiwi, an IT manager who is in his 40s.

The incident occurred near the Frontier Community Centre in the Jurong West area on the afternoon of 24 February.

Renisse was looking out of the window in her 7th floor flat when she spotted a man walking awkwardly on the ground floor before collapsing. She alerted her mother who then rushed to the ground floor.

Hui approached the man, who had no pulse, and immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him. She was assisted in her effort by Goh.

To restart the man’s heart, Hui, Goh, Cheong and Ng took turns to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) on him.

An SCDF ambulance arrived at the scene shortly to bring the man to Ng Teng Fong Hospital and he was later discharged.

Colonel Michael Chua, Commander of 4th SCDF division, who was at the ceremony to give the award, thanked the recipients for their quick actions, which helped save the man’s life.
