From Town & Country

Huzzah! The What We Do in the Shadows and Pirates of the Caribbean mash-up we didn't know we needed is headed for HBO Max, and the one and only Taika Waititi is involved. Here's what we know about Our Flag Means Death.

It's about a real pirate named Stede Bonnet.

Bonnet's life story is ripe for comedic interpretation: known as "The Gentleman Pirate," he was born a land-owning aristocrat, then later decided to take to the high seas.

Waititi will executive produce, and David Jenkins will serve as showrunner.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Waititi will have time to work on the show—and direct its first episode—once he finishes writing and directing Thor: Love and Thunder. Jenkins will helm the ship (sorry, had to), having previously served as showrunner for TBS's People of Earth.

“A series concept like this jumps off the page, and you can instantly envision every moment,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said in a statement. “David and Taika’s unique take on Bonnet’s rollicking misadventures on the high seas are sure to thrill and delight audiences everywhere.”

It's still early days.

No cast members or timeline for have been announced, and Waititi still has Thor (in addition to a host of other projects in development at Netflix and Showtime) on his plate, so it could be a while before Our Flag Means Death lands on HBO Max. But rest assured—should any new developments surface, Town & Country will be sure to keep this article updated with the latest news.
