Flesh and Blood viewers were left with one major question tonight (February 27) as the series finale ended on a huge cliffhanger.

Following much speculation, it was finally revealed that Mar (Stephen Rea) was the one left in a critical condition after a bust-up with Jake (Russell Tovey).

After Viv's new husband punched her son, Jake retaliated by running at him and accidentally pushing him off the balcony.

Mark wasn't dead, though – he was just knocked unconscious. Mary then went to see to him but, as many fans had suspected, her intentions were of the sinister variety. She tried to suffocate Mark on the beach, but luckily for him, the authorities turned up before she could finish the job.

Mark was left in a coma with no concrete evidence to incriminate Mary or Jake, and with a lot of alcohol and Diazepam in his system, the police wrote off his fall as an accident.

The episode ended with Mark opening his eyes – which naturally leads us into a second series – but in the first episode, viewers were shown someone being taken away in a body bag.

So if it wasn't Mark's body, whose was it?

"Was the body bag at the beginning Viv's first husband and Mary killed him too? Hello ITV, I need answers," tweeted one viewer, while another wrote: "That was good but weird. What was with the body bag in the first episode?! Who was it?! Surely there will be a season 2."

"Still struggling to understand where the body bag fits into it, literally trying to piece it together but can't," added someone else.

Flesh and Blood is available on the ITV Hub.
