As of Friday (18 January), food products containing alcohol will be allowed for sale and consumption in public places past 10.30pm.

All food items, except for beverages, will be exempted from the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act (LCA), said the Ministry of Home Affairs in a media release on Thursday.

Enacted in 2015, the Act – which applies to all products with more than 0.5 per cent alcohol – restricts the sale hours of liquor and consumption of liquor in public places.

The exemption comes following a review by MHA, during which it took in feedback from the public and industry that certain products containing alcohol need not be regulated under the LCA as consumers are unlikely to abuse them.

Beverages containing alcohol will continue to be regulated “given the significantly higher risk of abuse”, said the MHA.

“MHA and the Police will monitor the ground situation, and periodically review and update the legislation as required,” the ministry added.
